@rhetor,
Each cube is one entity. They just unfolded themselves and folded slightly differently forming a cube. Think it as a hedgehog turning into a needle ball. Or transformers if you were born in the 80s.
With the shape portrayed in this comic, yes, they would have to have one ripped in half (assuming each half became a face as implied by the top-right panel), but a cube in general would not require that. You can form cubes out of 2×1 sheets and keep them intact, with each domino forming the +X+Y, -X+Z, and -Y-Z sides, respectively (for example).
Of course a more important point is that dominos do not fold, nor are they sentient or even particularly predisposed towards wanting to preserve an upright orientation.

Yeah: I’m going to go with insane…
…INSANELY FUNNY~!
Seriously, Ryan…you are one of–if not the most–creative cartoonists out there. Your star is rising, sir…and I’m glad to see it after that ‘bad beat’ a couple years back against that GIRL! strip.
The Domino Revolution!
Viva la Revolucion!
For three of them to form a cube one has to rip itself in half.
Impressive defense-formation, though.

Transformers, dominoes in disguise.
^hahaha
Oh yeah? Well answer this: If dice evolved from dominoes, how come there are still dominoes?
So dice’s sides the will have a random values from 0-9. Kinda makes me want one.
I see my self as at creative mind. But this comic allways surprised me. Where du you get this from? Its so mind blowing. Keep up the good work
Thanks. I don’t know where I get ideas. I just sit and think and try to entertain myself. Perhaps I’m insane.

Dominos are cancan dancers( in the midle picture )
“Men, prepare to DIE!”
In the special Buni-XKCD crossover strip Ryan creates with Randall Munroe, the cubes then turn into tesseracts.
Oh gosh now I want a Buni xkcd crossover xD
Defensive Position!
