Mr. Bill: I assume the snowman either borrowed money from the mob or gambled on credit, and now can’t pay up. If there’s hope that with sufficient motivation he’ll be able to make payments, sell off assets, or beg for money from friends and relatives, the mob will work to “motivate” him. E.g., put him under a hot lamp for a few minutes, trim a bit off the carrot, and show him the snowblower, and he may discover overlooked financial resources.
But when it becomes clear that he’ll never be able to pay the debt – or that collecting it will take more time and effort than it’s worth, then there’s only one more way they can make use of him: as an example “to encourage the others”.
